The Tea Workers
15 min. 2019
Darjeeling’s tea gardens have been a
backdrop for political upheavals throughout their history. In the summer of 2017,
a 104-day long city-wide shutdown prompted a closure of the gardens. The Tea Workers explores the ways in
which labour and gender hierarchies affect women in the unstable, changing
landscape of tea production.
Featuring a collection of personal reflections which speak to everyday life in Darjeeling one year after the strike, The Tea Workers holds space for the taken-for-granted backbone of the industry: its women.
