Short filmSze-Yang Ade Lam is an interdisciplinary dancer who has trained in a vast range of performance styles, from ballet to martial arts to hip hop. Through his words and dance, he reflects on the heteronormative politics endorsed through certain choreographies.
Ballet as a dance form has fascinated me for a long time, particularly in the way that it represents femininity and fragility. There is a paradox within it which on one hand involves rigorous, often painful practice and routine, and on the other hand presents as fluid, soft, and effortless.
The physical demands of traditional ballet place certain bodies at the forefront based on generalized notions of femininity and masculinity. In comparison, martial arts upholds its own set of stereotypes which favours certain body types over others. This short portrait documentary explores the complex relationship between dance, queerness, gender, and identity.

Darjeeling’s tea gardens have been a
backdrop for political upheavals throughout their history. In the summer of 2017,
a 104-day long city-wide shutdown prompted a closure of the gardens. The Tea Workers explores the ways in
which labour and gender hierarchies affect women in the unstable, changing
landscape of tea production.
Featuring a collection of personal reflections
which speak to everyday life in Darjeeling one year after the strike, The Tea Workers holds space for the
taken-for-granted backbone of the industry: its women.

This experimental video is a reflection upon specific memories I have had, all of which have involved water in some capacity. Each memory is meant to sit with the viewer through the following sequence so that he or she can reflect upon it and place him- or herself in the memory, filling in gaps with fragments of his or her own recollections.
Incorporating sounds and visuals produced by vintage technologies, this film is meant to be a multisensory reflection on water and the potential it has for carrying memories.

Peripheral MunicipalitiesPhotography
This project was inspired by a Statistics Canada report conducted over the course of one decade, from 2001 to 2011, which revolves around patterns of immigration in several first-ring peripheral municipalities adjacent to the city of Toronto.
The report shows a clear increase in the settlement of immigrants in these peripheral regions, and this photographic series aims to present this information from a different perspective - by focusing primarily on structures put in place after 2001, and servicing any immigrant population.
The establishment of these new buildings, along with the repurposing of old buildings for use by the immigrant population, becomes an act of claiming space.
Establishing these spaces as part of these communities emphasizes the growth of such populations within these peripheral municipalities. By narrowing down the focus to the physical presence of each of these places, I aim to comment on the ways that they complement and contrast the suburban landscapes which they inhabit.
